I have always expressed myself through music. I can think back to a time, a place, or a particular smell, when I hear certain songs or soundtracks to my life. One time is especially near and dear to my heart.
I get teary eyed every graduation season. The unknown, the nerves, the expectation of greatness in the coming years. Students graduating have so much to look forward to;
I’m just beginning, the pen’s in my hand, ending unplanned.
There is a certain song that strikes me and resonates with me. It takes me back about 12 years to a special graduation I attended of a beautiful young woman. She had struggled with illness the majority of the school year, but through her will and determination she made it through stronger and FULL OF LIFE! Her life was before her, and to see her promote to the next grade level was such a blessing!
The song, “Unwritten” reminds me of that special moment. Her life was before her; that graduation day;
Today is where your book begins, The rest is still unwritten.
I love the song simply due to the lyrics. The singer sings it beautifully, but when you listen closer and hear the words, the meaning is so valuable and inspirational.
Coca-Cola™ and its “Share a Coke and a Song” campaign understands the power of music, and the ability that music has to transform people’s moods, challenges and even lives! I have a great recipe and cupcake topper tutorial that uses the lyrics to Unwritten for a graduation party!

It’s an easy chocolate cupcake recipe that uses simple box cake mix, but instead of the water, replacing it with Coca-Cola! It makes the cake a bit sweeter, lighter in texture and simply delicious!
- One box chocolate or devils food cake mix
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup Coca-Cola
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- Favorite store bought icing
- Cupcake toppers with favorite graduation lyrics
- Candy decor
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients together until smooth, about 2 minutes. Spoon into a muffin pan with cupcake liners. Cook your cupcakes for 18- 21 minutes. Let cool. Use your favorite vanilla icing recipe or store brand for each cupcake.
Once you have your cupcakes iced, then comes the fun part! Adding your own graduation themed lyrics to a cupcake topper! Download the pdf here. Enter in the lyrics to a song that you love! Print it out on white or colored cardstock. Cut or punch out with a circle punch. Glue them down on a toothpick and voila!
For my cupcakes I decorated to a theme of Coca-Cola complete with little gummy soda bottles as my toppers! I loved how they turned out; fun, Coca-Cola themed and inspirational- perfect for graduation!
